Bellacia's headlines changed every moment with each new piece of data added, updating each news item to make it more relevant, more compelling.

And then the visuals began to appear: A recording spell of a woman smiling and waving in front of the landmark Faruza Bridge just before it exploded behind her; a family hunching over as rubble and shrieking, tentacled monsters—blown from the water—rained upon them; and old footage of a “National Treasure” sign being erected in front of the bridge years ago.

Inessa wailed, loud and distressed. I jerked at the sound. People were shouting in the open hallway where Peters still stood, eyes wide on the broadcast.

Behind him, I saw Constantine leaning against the opposite wall. He looked bored, but his eyes were tracking what was happening through the open doorway.

Inessa pointed wildly at me, speaking to the others. “There will be more of this. Feral Awakenings are a sign. They are one of the signs. She's going to kill us all.” Ferocity lit in Inessa's eyes and Peters' tablet shrilly beeped as if it read something on her, some intention, and was already listing a punishment if she went through with it.

Her wild gaze narrowed in on me, like lightning pinpointing a target in a savage storm. “Unless I kill her first.” She lunged for me.

She didn't get a whole step before Peters neutralized her, freezing her mid-lunge in a physically impossible position without the aid of magic. But it was if he'd frozen the whole tableau. All of us stood in shocked silence. Constantine broke it as he relaxed back against the wall in the corridor—which meant he'd been in previous motion.

Everyone stared at Inessa, who suddenly started screaming.

I clapped my sketchbook shut. “And that's my cue.”

I hurried from the room, and Constantine easily kept pace with me until we reached his suite.

Olivia, Neph, and Will skidded inside, eyes wide, five minutes later.

So much for some well-earned lethargy.
